Editor, Gazette-Journal: Last Wednesday, my staff and I had the privilege of hosting a luncheon to honor the volunteers of Mathews County Meals on Wheels. We came together to celebrate the very heart and soul of our organization—our remarkable volunteers. As I looked around the room, I was overwhelmed by the incredible amount of heart, compassion and warmth all gathered in one space. As a lifelong Mathews County native, I was also struck by how many volunteers are people who chose to make Mathews County their home and, in turn, have chosen to give back so generously to the community they now call home. Our volunteers do so much more than deliver meals. They are a vital lifeline for many of our patrons. Rain or shine, in the heat of summer and the cold of winter, they deliver nutritious meals, warm smiles, friendly conversation, and crucial wellness checks to those that need them most.
