Letter: Homeschoolers should be able to play on teams

As of right now, homeschoolers are not allowed to play on public school interscholastic sports teams. According to the Virginia High School League (VHSL) policy, an athlete must be a student in good standing attending the local high school, enrolled in at least five subjects, and have passed at least five subjects from the prior semester. Obviously, homeschooled students cannot meet these requirements; however, in 25 states homeschoolers are allowed to participate in public schooled activities.

In January, House Bill 2395 was debated in the House Education Committee with the outcome that a joint House-Senate study would investigate the effects of allowing homeschooled students the opportunity to participate in VHSL-regulated activities. Del. R. Steven Landes (R-Weyers Cave) stated, "This body has never had an in-depth study of this issue. I believe that sometime soon this bill will become law."
