Editor, Gazette-Journal: Early voting has already started for the Nov. 3 General Election. There is a referendum on the ballot asking you to vote “Yes” or “No” to add 1 percent to the sales tax. This additional 1 percent does not apply to groceries or medicine. The funds generated can only be used for repairing, renovating and maintaining our school buildings. The last renovations to any the schools were completed 30 years ago in 1995-1996 when the “new” Lee-Jackson Elementary School was built and Thomas Hunter and Mathews High School got new roofs and some renovations. It is estimated that this small 1 percent tax increase will raise at least $900,000 a year for our schools. Plans are in place to use the funds generated by the tax to replace the school roofs, modernize the water systems and upgrade the Harry M. Ward Auditorium, which is so important to the community.
