Letter: Evil deeds underestimated

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Your Jan. 20 Editor’s Copy, "When Hitler came to power" contains two sentences of particular interest: (1) "Hitler’s war cost the lives of over 20 million soldiers and civilians" and (2) "Hitler … hatred of Jews … of which he had an estimated six million killed!"

As editor, it is your job to use facts and figures that are correct. While it is true Hitler exterminated an estimated six million Jews, that is only one group and a fraction of the number killed in the Nazi concentration camps.

About 40 years ago, my wife and I attended the dedication of a Holocaust memorial in Denver, Colo. The Jewish woman next to us advised, "Please remember that Hitler killed an equal number of Christians. Also targeted were gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, disabled, mentally handicapped, political opponents and other groups. The true number will never be known for certain."
