As sure as spring will arrive, the Mathews school superintendent and school board are crying the blues over a shortage of funding. Hey folks, join the crowd. Unemployment is up, work is scarce, wages are down, gas prices are up, Social Security is frozen for another year, and even federal wages are frozen, health insurance is up. Of course, the federal deficit is up with the federal government borrowing $5 billion every working day. And government entities of all types are running out of Band-Aids and one-time fix-its to their budgets.

Now it’s crunch time. And what does the school crowd want? Pay raises and more money from, well, you name the source. I have a recommendation for the school gang—no pay raises, and how about some pay cuts. If you are a school employee you are lucky to have a job and some health insurance. And if you don’t like this: Quit. There are plenty of qualified and unemployed individuals out there hungry to take you...
