Letter: A way to restore confidence in Congress

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I have requested Senators Webb and Warner, and House Representative Wittman to consider sponsoring or supporting this proposed Constitutional amendment:

"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States."

I did not write or know the composer of this possible 28th Amendment, but I fully support its simply stated intent and applaud its author. At its core, this proposal gives Congress a chance to reclaim its honor and build a stronger level of trust with the electorate. Amendments to the Constitution can be quickly adopted if the voice of Americans is united and strong. The 26th Amendment granting 18-year-olds the vote took just three months and a week to enact in 1971.
