Branden Patrick Green, the 43-year-old executive director of Tri-River ASAP, was found dead in his Hayes office about 8:30 last Thursday morning and Steve Alvin Curry, 66, was arrested at his Lancaster home about two hours later without incident and charged in connection with Green’s murder.
Curry faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with a felony and is being held without bond in the Gloucester County Jail. He is scheduled to make a preliminary appearance in Gloucester General District Court on Jan. 7, 2026.
According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, Curry was convicted in Lancaster General District Court in April for violating the terms of his probation. He was convicted in the same court in November of 2023 for Driving While Intoxicated.
On Dec. 10, Curry spoke with his Tri-River ASAP case worker, who informed him that a violation would be issued because he had failed to comply with court-ordered counseling. Curry became angry and said he “was going to take care of it” with Green the following day, the criminal complaint stated.
At 8:41 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, the Gloucester County Emergency Communications Center received a call of a deceased male inside the ASAP office, which is located in the 3000 block of George Washington Memorial Highway. The caller reported that they passed another individual leaving the area and provided a description to the responding Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
Deputies and criminal investigators were at the scene within minutes and located Green deceased inside from multiple gunshot wounds, the office said. Between evidence recovered at the scene and witness statements, GCSO investigators identified Curry as the suspect. The investigation has determined that Green was known to the suspect and that this was not a random act of violence, the office said.
Due to the proximity to local schools and the initial unknown direction of the suspect’s flight, several schools in Gloucester were placed in a secure status, as well as schools in neighboring counties. GCSO contacted the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, who located Curry at his residence at approximately 10:19 a.m. and took him into custody without incident.
Additional evidence was recovered at the time of Curry’s arrest. He was turned over to the custody of Gloucester County investigators and transported to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office.
As well as the first-degree murder charge and the firearms charge, additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues, a release from the GCSO stated.
In that release, the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office thanked its partners with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations and Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the Tidewater office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for their assistance with the incident.
“Our continued thoughts are with Mr. Green’s family and loved ones,” the release stated.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Green served as Tri-River ASAP executive director since March of 2023. He received his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York, College at Cortland in 2008 and earned postgraduate degrees from California University of Pennsylvania, PennWest California and Liberty University. Among his other interests, the profile states that he was an instructor with the Handicapped Scuba Association.
