The Gloucester High School field hockey team continued to keep pace in the region by defeating the Eagles of the Covenant School from Charlottesville, 8-0, on Saturday. With the win, the Dukes’ record improved to 8-2.
Several milestones were reached on the team during the victory. Reese Miller scored two goals in the game giving her 100 career goals. She now stands three goals from breaking the Dukes’ all-time record for goals in a career set by Cassidy Goodwin in 2015. Mackenzi Reece scored a hat trick, reaching the 50-goal career milestone. Charlotte Houtz, Peyton Sutton and Ayelu Mason closed out the scoring for the Dukes.
Assists were credited to Miller (three), Houtz (two), Sutton, Abby Junker (two), Ellary Miller and Adyson Wymer. Play time and experience were crucial for the long-term success of the team. All players played extensively. The team outshot with Eagles, 22-10, and were very effective with their transition play and corner defense. They earned more corners, 14-12.
Defensively, they were anchored by the goalie, Addy Zabicki, who made 10 saves. McKayla Clark, Caroline Klink, Ellary Miller, and Junker held down the starting Eagles to one shot on two corners. Maddie Kadel, Ryleigh Jeffrey, Mason and Hailee Johnston held down the corner defense in the second half keeping the shutout intact.
The team continues to be unselfish as three players now have recorded at least 10 goals.
The Dukes had been scheduled to play the Monarchs at Menchville High School on Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather.
