The Gloucester High School varsity softball team took one win this past week, but suffered two close losses.
The Lady Dukes achieved a 12-0 shutout no-hit win over the Warhill Lions last Wednesday, April 22, at home. On the pitcher’s mound, Autumn Cookson and Harper Hardaway combined for a no-hitter. Cookson made her first start of the year in the circle by pitching two innings.
Addison Keister led Gloucester offensively with two hits, contributing a single, a double and three RBIs. Cameron Palas, Cookson and Tessa Carteret recorded two hits apiece.
New Kent
Gloucester’s six-game winning streak came to an end Friday night as the Lady Dukes fell to the New Kent Trojans, 9-8, on the road in eight innings of play.
Cookson led the offense with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Palas and Alexis Dishman each contributed two hits and two RBIs.
New Kent secured the win in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run.
Jamestown
The Lady Dukes also fell to the Jamestown Eagles, 2-1, at home on Monday. Gloucester had five hits on the day with three of them coming in the fourth inning.
Cookson started in the circle and pitched three perfect innings before giving up a one-out walk in the fourth inning. A leadoff walk in the fifth brough Hardaway to the circle, who gave up one run in the loss.
Gloucester could only muster one run in the fourth inning as Hannah Horsley hit a triple to later score on a single hit by Keister.
The Lady Dukes will travel to play Bruton next Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
JV team
The GHS JV softball team also suffered a loss to New Kent, falling to the Trojans, 4-1, at home Friday night. The JV Lady Dukes rallied to defeat Jamestown, 29-0, on the road Monday afternoon.
