Lady Devils beat Yellow Jackets, Pointers

The Mathews High School varsity softball team posted wins against Northampton and West Point in the past week, and fell to the King William Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Northampton

The Lady Devils defeated the visiting Northampton Yellow Jackets on Friday afternoon, 12-1. Before the first pitch, the Senior Night game included the recognition of three Lady Devils—second baseman Emily Coons, first baseman Hannah Davis and centerfielder Addison Lowe—who will be hanging up their cleats at the end of the season and graduating from MHS.

Freshman phenom Hailey Love dominated the visiting Yellow Jackets, striking out seven—including her 100th strikeout on the season. She also contributed a single on offense.

Addison Griffith (three singles), Carter Hayes, Lowe, Bentlea Lawrence, Davis and Marley Brock (two singles apiece) collected multiple hits, while Kylee Swanson added a single in the Devils’ victory.

West Point

The MHS girls took to the road on Monday, beating West Point, 19-7. Although she only pitched three innings, Love recorded six strikeouts, holding the Pointers scoreless while also hitting a double.

The Mathews bats dominated in the game, led by Brock, who had three singles and a double, Hayes and Lowe, who picked up three singles apiece, Swanson and McKenzie Bartlett, who each had a single and double, and Davis and Griffith, who added one single each.

King William

The Lady Devils played a great game against a great team on Tuesday; however, they fell to King William, 9-1. “We were all very proud of their effort, energy and enthusiasm,” MHS Coach “JJ” Ashberry said of his team. “It was their best complete game of the season all the way around against the best team we play each season.”

Love, Lawrence and Hayes each had singles in the game.

JV games

Meanwhile, the MHS JV softball team split a pair of games this week, posting a come-from-behind win on Monday against West Point, 15-8, and falling to King William on Tuesday, 14-1.

In the West Point game, Keira Cannon was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing one earned run on four hits over five innings.

Natalie Davis led the way to victory driving in four runs with a double and a single followed closely by Leeah Taylor who drove in three runs with a triple a walk. Mathews had a sure eye at the plate collecting 10 walks. Alex Walker, Emilia Patterson and Cannon led the team with two free passes each.

On Tuesday, Cannon took the loss on the mound, allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs. The pitcher struck out five and walked four over five innings. The only score of the night for Mathews was by Taylor after stealing two bases.
