Gazette-Journal editor Charlie Koenig and reporter Melany Slaughter were named Tuesday night to the 2022 Virginia School Boards Association Media Honor Roll by the Mathews and Gloucester school boards.
The two boards unanimously approved resolutions Tuesday night, with Mathews naming Koenig and Gloucester naming Slaughter.
Koenig, who has served as editor since 2010, joined the newspaper in September 1988. This is the eighth time that the Mathews board has named him to the VSBA Media Honor Roll. He received this recognition in 1998, 2006, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. Slaughter has been with the paper since 2019.
According to the resolutions, the award is given to express the school board’s “appreciation for your balanced and accurate approach to sharing with this community both the challenges facing our schools and the successes achieved by the teachers and students.”
