JAMES WAYMAN HARVELL JR.

James Wayman Harvell Jr. of Gloucester, died July 30, 2015 at Riverside Water Reed Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 8, 1937 in Hopewell, Va., to James W. Harvell and Margaret Papenfus, who preceded him in death.

He was a member of John Marshall High School Cadet Corps in Richmond, Va., where his friends called him Butch. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Ceremonial Guard stationed at Anacostia, Md. He was assigned to the Presidential Security Guard, HMX1, where he was charged with protecting Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Upon leaving the Marines, he became a Henrico police officer and then worked for Hunt Wesson Foods (now ConAgra) before retiring in 1995 with 24 years of service. Upon retiring, he worked for Gloucester County Recreation and Smith’s Florist.

He was an avid golfer and, after moving to Gloucester, he became one of the founding and charter members of United States Marine Corps League, Middle Peninsula Detachment #1317. He was named Marine of the Year of the detachment in 2012.

He loved watching his grandsons play baseball, CNU baseball, and the Washington Nationals. 

Jim married Julia (Judy) Ernest Harvell in 1960, and they had four children, Mark F. Harvell and his wife Julie of Mathews, Miriam C. Harvell Souba and her husband Kevin of Newport News, Heather E. Harvell Broussard of Layette, La., and John A. Harvell of Yorktown. He had 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. He is also survived by Ashley Clark and his best friend, Maggie, his English Springer Spaniel.

The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people who cared for him in ICU and Drs. Khalia, West, and Long, and their wonderful staffs.

The family received friends at the Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, from 4-6 p.m. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at Singleton United Methodist Church by the Rev. Calvin Griffin. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Singleton United Methodist Church.
