JAMES EDWIN LONG

Jim’s death on July 3, 2019 was sudden but peaceful. He was born on October 29, 1957 to a military family stationed in Harlingen, Texas.

His family lived overseas at various postings for much of Jimmy’s childhood, and he went to school in Germany and Spain. Jim continued the military tradition, joining the U.S. Air Force after graduation. He served honorably in North Carolina, then moved to the Tidewater area where his mother and several other family members had settled. He trained as a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding, and worked there for many years.

Jimmy was a shy guy with a quick, dry wit. He was a talented artist and used to sell his paintings at craft shows and other events. Several nieces have shared particular memories of him from their childhoods, a unique and special uncle. Jim leaves behind numerous nieces and a few nephews, and many “greats” of the next generation.

At the time of his death, Jimmy had been living with his beloved mother, Pauline Arthur, acting as companion and caregiver. Paulie is devasted and bereft. He is also survived by sister, Jeannie (Don) Smith, and brothers, Dennis and David (Lisa) Long. His family also includes stepsisters, Michelle Greely, Cindy (Steve) Bocrie, Ruth Ronquest, and stepbrothers, Michael McNish and David Arthur.

The family offers sincere and deep thanks to neighbors, Kevin and Sue Dame, for invaluable care and assistance.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, from 1:30-2 p.m. with a memorial service starting at 2 o’clock.

Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
