Interest-free loans available to fix failing septic systems

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission will receive $200,000 from the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund to help fix or totally replace septic systems in Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, King and Queen, King William and Essex counties.

Homeowners who qualify for receiving a loan at zero percent interest must pay the loan off within 10 years, a release said. However, the last time the planning district received money for loans the pay back did not start for three years—or a total timeframe to pay off the loan of 13 years, according to MPPDC finance director Beth Johnson.

MPPDC has had an ongoing effort during the past 18 years to identify, target and repair failing septic systems. Johnson said that, as of June 1, the authority had served as fiscal agent for repair or replacement of 112 failed septic systems throughout the Middle Peninsula. Most of that total, 78, were for properties in Gloucester and Mathews, she said.
