Hearing Tuesday on proposed solar farm

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Tuesday night to allow a proposed solar energy facility on Route 14 near Toddsbury Lane. The public hearing on the matter will begin at 7:30 in the colonial courthouse. 

The applicant, Strata Solar Development, is seeking a Conditional Use Permit to allow just over 203 acres of land to be used for the establishment of a 20 megawatt utility-scale solar energy facility on four parcels of land located in the Rural Conservation Zoning District. According to a county notice, this district aims to preserve the county’s natural resources, including prime agricultural soils, watersheds, etc., with a limited amount of residential development permitted. 

Strata plans to sell the electricity collected at the Route 14 project to an electric power grid. The company plans to erect 66,000 photovoltaic panels on 900 racks, which will rotate large metal plates to follow the sun.
