Hearing May 20 on grass runway request

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission will hold a joint public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 on an application by Joe Perdue of Port Haywood, for a conditional use permit to place a grass runway for light aircraft on a 29.2-acre parcel at the corner of John Clayton Memorial Highway and Fickle Fen Road in Mathews.
This will be the third public hearing scheduled on the CUP request since March 11, when the Mathews County Planning Commission held its first public hearing on the matter. After a number of neighbors objected to the project, the commission voted 5-2 to recommend that the Mathews Board of Supervisors deny the application.
Supervisors scheduled a public hearing on the matter for April 17, but halted further discussion on the advice of County Attorney Andrea Erard, who said the application could not go forward because it was made in the name of the prior owners rather than Perdue, who had purchased the property after submitting the application.
