A vehicle accident on Route 17 south of Gloucester Court House Monday morning took the life of a Hampton resident. The accident occurred at about 6:33 a.m. in the 6500 block.

State police said its preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a 2020 Yamaha YZF600 motorcycle was travelling in the northbound lanes of Route 17 when he lost control and crossed over the median into the southbound lanes.

After crossing into the southbound lanes, the motorcycle struck a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze head on and the motorcycle driver was ejected and killed upon impact. State police identified him as Harry Lee Walker, 29, of Beall Drive in Hampton.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze suffered minor injuries, according to state police, and was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

This was the first traffic fatality of 2020 in Gloucester.
