GUEST shelter doubles number of homeless served

As the season has now closed for the Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team’s night shelter program, the total number of homeless people served by the shelter this season more than doubled what it was last year.

John Seltzer, executive director of GUEST, provided a wrap-up of the program and a look into its future last week during a visit with Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross).

According to Seltzer, this by far has been the busiest season GUEST has seen since its inception in 2014. Since January, the program has served 230 people. “That’s up over 100 percent from last year,” he said.

When the program started, Seltzer said an average of six or seven people used the night shelter. As of last week, the program was averaging over 20 people using the night shelter, which is housed at various churches throughout the year.
