Grants may help stimulate economic development

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission may apply for several state grants this fall to help stimulate economic development in the region, executive director Lewis Lawrence said.

Lawrence gave a GoVirginia Region 6 update to the commission during a meeting at its headquarters in Saluda Sept. 27. He said that applications may be submitted to Go Virginia by mid-November for the chance to receive funds.

 Region 6 has been allocated $1 million from the state initiative for projects that may bring more and higher-paying jobs, Lawrence said Sept. 28. The region includes the George Washington (Fredericksburg area), Middle Peninsula, and Northern Neck Planning District Commissions.

Lawrence said grants may be sought for three different programs that could strengthen economic development here: broadband internet service, attracting research and engineering jobs, and a “flash freeze” facility at the Middle Peninsula Regional Jail in Saluda where fresh produce and se...
