Good news: Local beaches found to be clean

There is good news about local beaches heading into the holiday weekend: their waters have been found to be clean.

The Virginia Department of Health tests weekly for the presence of enterococci bacteria and considers the beaches clean if they have 104 or fewer colony forming units (cfu)/100 milliliters of water.

According to the VDH website, Gloucester Point Beach on the York River was tested on June 25 and the sample found to be just 1 cfu/100 ml.

The same result was found the same day at Festival Beach on the Chesapeake Bay at Diggs in Mathews.

After last week’s testing, no swimming advisories were posted on any beaches in Virginia, the website said. The results and details about beach monitoring are posted on the VDH website under directory for environmental epidemiology.
