Gloucester resident arraigned in connection with Jan. 6 riot

Melody Steele-Smith of Gloucester was arraigned via video/telephone in the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., on Friday on five charges related to her alleged participation in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. She entered pleas of not guilty on all counts and remains free on a personal recognizance bond.

The charges against Steele-Smith consist of the following: obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, entering and remaining in certain rooms in the Capitol building, and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.

According to the affidavit submitted by FBI Special Agent Jonathan Fugitt, law enforcement received a tip on Jan. 8 from a witness who stated that Steele-Smith had been involved in the riot at the Capitol building, and that evidence to that effect was on her Facebook page.
