Gloucester population slows to a crawl; decline continues for Mathews

Population growth in Gloucester County has slowed to a crawl, while the estimated decline of Mathews County’s population continues.

Population estimates as of July 1, 2016 for these counties along with all other Virginia localities were released on Jan. 31 by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

Gloucester County had an estimated population of 36,983 at the midpoint of last year, according to the center. This represents an increase of 125 people, or just 0.3 percent, from the county’s census of 36,858 taken in 2010.

Nearly all of the growth was accounted for by a surplus of births over deaths (natural increase), the estimates said. A net migration of just six people was noted over the period. Net migration is the number of people moving to the county, against the number moving away.

In fact, these figures are adjusted downward from the 2015 estimate of 37,072 people living in Gloucester.
