GI bridge closed for marine openings until further notice

The Gwynn’s Island Bridge has been closed for marine openings until further notice.

According to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation, a piece of equipment being towed by a vehicle struck the bridge’s tender house this afternoon. Route 223 traffic was reduced to a single lane, but both travel lanes had reopened by 9 p.m.

Further inspection of the bridge will be performed on Wednesday, Oct. 13, said the release, and more information will be announced when the extent of the damage to the tender house is known.

As of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, VDOT did not have an estimated schedule for reopening.
