GHS W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society inducts 9

Nine new members were inducted into Gloucester High School’s chapter of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society during a ceremony on Feb. 26 at the school.

Nijaliya Billups, Diya Cheema, Jaidyn Forrest, Brianne Haley, Sanai Oakley, Tatiyana Pollard, Jaeda Torres, Alaishaninel Vazquez Delgado and Ellyana Wilson-Carter were “found to have demonstrated academic excellence and sterling character” and deserving of joining the elite society.

The ceremony was conducted by the officers of the organization. Destiny-Grace Morales serves as president, Alyssa Askew is vice president, Charles J. McKeller Jr. and Maya Torres are co-secretaries, Destiny Harris is treasurer, and Dasia Gray is the chapter’s communications officer.

GHS Principal Craig Reed and sponsor Dianne Carter de Mayo were also on hand to welcome the students and their families to the GHS organization.

School board member Brenda Mack addressed the group on embracing the “Triple Cs” of the organization: Character, Competency, and Caring. Volunteers Brenda Dixon and Brenda Davis prepared a repast for the inductees, members and guests.

The W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society was established at the Florida State University in 1991 with the induction of 75 charter members. It is a scholastic, leadership and service organization which recognizes the academic achievements of students.

The purpose of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society is to honor the memory of the outstanding educator, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois by promoting the pursuit of academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.
