GHS softball loses in semifinals

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team’s season came to an end last Wednesday, June 1, when the Lady Dukes lost to Nansemond River, 10-0, in the Virginia High School League Class B Region 5 semifinals.

The Lady Dukes gave up 10 runs and had four errors. Pitcher Ja’yanna Richards walked two batters and struck out one. Gloucester avoided a perfect game loss when Richards reached first base on an infield error. Pinch runner Kennedy Bohannon advanced to second base on Grace Sinko Van-Liew’s bunt, but did not go any further.

Gloucester ended the season with an 18-4 record.

All-Peninsula District

Gloucester softball had five players selected to the All-Peninsula District team.

Hailey Hardaway, Jayanna Richards and Sinko Van-Liew were all first-team choices. Hardaway, a catcher, hit .468 during the season with 44 RBIs. She had five doubles, six triples and five home runs as part of her 37-hit season.
