GHS softball alums begin college seasons

Four former Gloucester High School softball players have started their 2022 college seasons.

Mackenzie Smith is currently pitching for the Winthrop University Eagles. The South Carolina team is 0-5, with Smith leading the pitching staff with a 3.86 earned run average (ERA).

The school will host the Winthrop Eagles Invitational this weekend. Winthrop will play Youngstown State and Albany on Feb. 18 and Robert Morris and Western Carolina the following day. The Eagles will wrap up the weekend with a single game on Sunday against Ball State.

Andi Booker and Sierra West are both playing for the Bryant & Stratton College team in Virginia Beach. This season, Booker will play shortstop and second base, while West will cover second base, the outfield and the pitcher’s circle. The Bobcats are currently 0-2 and will be hitting the field again March 5 as the Bobcats will host Surry Community College in a doubleheader.
