Rowers from Gloucester and Mathews showcased their skill and teamwork in Saturday’s Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, claiming top honors in multiple categories.

Jacob Gross of the Gloucester Rowing Association dominated the men’s singles event, securing first place. Gross, Cooper White, Willis Redding and Zach Hudson of the men’s junior quad placed third in their team event, demonstrating exceptional synchrony.
White and Hudson advanced to the finals in the men’s double, while Braxten Abler and Dani LaCosa impressed as finalists in the women’s double competition.
In the mixed four category, Ayden Duke, Robert West, Hannah McAllister, Camryn Micket, along with coxswain Jacob Escamilla, clinched second place with their synchronized strokes.

For the Mathews High School crew, all boats entered secured spots in the finals.
In the men’s junior double event, Sam Tomcany and Jaxon McDonald powered through with a commanding lead ahead of River City and Elizabeth City to claim gold.
The men’s junior quad, including Tomcany, Bradley Murphy, Ray Hudgins and McDonald, secured gold medal with another substantial lead over their competition from River City and Gloucester.
Sydney Kollar earned a silver medal in the wildest event of the day, the women’s junior single. One of her competitors flipped over in the last 250 meters and Kollar passed another in the last 50 meters of the race securing her second-place finish.
Bryce Clark’s fourth-place finish in the men’s junior single event his first-ever competition in a single.
Anna West and Lillianna Humbles delivered a commendable performance in the women’s junior double event, securing fifth place overall.
This week, Mathews is hosting a home regatta at Willams Wharf Landing from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday as they gear up for the state championships the week after.
