GHS field hockey beats Chancellor in state semifinals; title game Saturday

The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team celebrated a win in the Virginia High School League’s Class 4 State Semifinals as it defeated the Chancellor Chargers, 3-1, Saturday at home. With this win, the Lady Dukes advance to the state finals on Saturday.

Scoring starts in second half

Following a scoreless first half, Hannah Symonds started the scoring with a third-period goal, assisted by Charlotte Houtz. The Lady Dukes kept the momentum going, not allowing the Chargers a shot on goal in the third quarter. Houtz added a second goal for Gloucester in the fourth period to extend the lead by 2-0.

The Chargers scored a goal, which was followed by another point scored by Houtz. This goal was assisted by Maddie Rowe and Aaliyah Mattocks. Addy Zabicki recorded five saves during the match.

GHS controls tempo

Gloucester controlled the tempo of the game with a 16-6 shot advantage and a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners earned. Houtz, Rowe and Kenleigh Hall controlled the midfield and were able to pass the ball many times to forwards Mattocks, Symonds and Peyton Sutton. Defense was led by Hailee Johnston, A.V. Wymer, Ellary Miller and Amelia Santiago.

With this victory, the Lady Dukes’ record improves to 19-3. They will travel to play the Loudoun Valley Vikings Saturday at Independence High School, Ashburn, in the state finals. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
