From quilts to Coke bottles, members reveal ‘treasures’

From portraits to quilts to vintage Coca-Cola bottles, members of the Gloucester Genealogical Society had plenty to look at Monday in a “Treasures from the Attic” meeting held at the Gloucester Library, Main Street Center.

The items on display triggered stories and memories that held the group rapt for two hours.

Ralph Parkes of Ware Neck, describing himself as an “avid Coca-Cola collector,” told the group that the familiar Coca-Cola Bottling Plant on Main Street, now an office building, was not the first such facility in Gloucester Court House. The first, he said, was established in 1922 behind the J. H. Martin Store, in an old shed; this would be the vicinity of the SunTrust Bank. The second was in the building that now houses Kelsick Market and the Puller Center, which became Bell Motors, then Ken Houtz Chevrolet.

The final bottling plant was built in 1951, Parkes said.
