We draw our readers’ attention to an article on the opposite page—a new thrust to identify historic sites and wrecks lying under the surface of the Chesapeake Bay.

Readers, this applies to us.

Anyone who followed the Yorktown Bicentennial activities in 1981 will remember the great explorations of English shipwrecks in the York River, scuttled as Cornwallis surrendered to Washington. A footnote occurred there this summer as another English ship was found.

We have never heard of Lord Dunmore’s ships being found in Milford Haven or Hill’s Bay, but there’s a good chance he left some behind after being driven off Gwynn’s Island by the patriots at Cricket Hill in 1776.

Schooners, fishing vessels, steamboats … their bones all lie in local waters, attracting fish and treasure hunters.
