A problem with the E-ZPass equipment at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge has caused several dozen motorists to be temporarily overcharged for their trip over the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge.
Marshall Herman, a Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson, said that of the approximately 20,000 toll transactions taking place on July 26-27, an inquiry showed that about 40 were questionable.
In those cases, she said, the E-ZPass transponder accounts were credited; the transponder toll is 85 cents but the regular car toll is $2.
David Caudill, VDOT’s assistant administrator for tolling operations, said there was a problem with the router, a device that is supposed to send the toll information regularly to a computer. But in some cases, Caudill said, the 10-minute sweep was charging a small number of accounts too much and it could not be detected until the next morning.
