Dukes head into playoffs with win streak

Gloucester finished its Peninsula District baseball schedule with four straight wins to secure a fourth-place finish. The Dukes, with a 12-6 district record, will face 11-7 Kecoughtan in the first round of the PD Tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday in War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

Gloucester crushed the homestanding Raiders 14-5 on Friday. Jacob Brown got the start on the plate and kept Warwick scoreless at 8-0 until the bottom of the fourth when three singles, a double and a three-run home run made it 8-5. Aaron O’Neil relieved Brown in the fifth and shut down the Raiders for the final three innings. Adam Baldwin had a home run in the win and Jacob Houston had a double.

The Dukes outplayed Phoebus 11-1 in their May 8 home field finale. Tyler Wood pitched the win, with O’Neil closing out the last inning. At the plate, Gloucester got an early home run from Wood, a pair of doubles from Houston, and doubles from Brian Belvin and Hector Rios.

Gloucester blanked host Denbigh with a 14-run shutout on May 4. Highlights included a triple by Houston. The Dukes also got by Woodside 6-4 on May 1. With the score at 6-2 after three innings, pitcher Michael Clements and his Wolverine counterpart settled in and allowed no further scoring until the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, a walk and a single put two Woodside runners on base, and O’Neil came in for Clements. The Wolverines managed to make it 6-4 and load the bases again with two outs. With a 2-2 count, a popup out by Woodside gave GHS the win.
