Duke wrestlers post wins to open season

The Gloucester High School wrestling team is off to a strong start this season, according to James Cook, head coach. Cook, who has been the assistant coach for the last three years, said the team of mostly new wrestlers has seen plenty of success thus far.

Last Wednesday, the team traveled to Phoebus High School to face the Phantoms and the Heritage High School Hurricanes. The team left with a 59-18 victory over Phoebus and a 54-18 win over Heritage.

On Saturday, the Dukes traveled to Jamestown High School where they once again defeated Heritage, 63-12. Gloucester also walked away with victories over Bethel (66-18), Jamestown (60-24) and Tucker (45-36). The Dukes’ only loss was a close match with Lafayette, 45-36.

Cook gave nods to a handful of wrestlers who are starting strong. Ethan Baker, who finished second in the state last year and Josh Seaton who was third in the state have both picked up where they left off last year. Cook said first-year wrestlers Christian Duke and ...
