Duff, Carter place 2nd in regional doubles

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team, runners up in VHSL Class 1, Region A, will advance to the first round of the state tournament on Friday against Region B champion Buffalo Gap.

If the girls win that match, and the semifinals that follow, they will advance to the state championship match on Thursday, June 6 at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Last week, Mathews High School hosted the regional singles and doubles tournaments, with the doubles team of Lyla Duff and Liberti Carter placing second in the region.

In the first round on Wednesday, Duff and Carter defeated Ava Purvis and Laiba Chattha of Northumberland by scores of 6-4 and 6-3, setting up Thursday’s championship match against Maggie Wonderling and Laney Williams of Rappahannock. The Mathews girls fell to Wonderling and Williams, last year’s state runners-up, 6-2, 6-4.In singles competition, Duff fell to Purvis by scores of 6-4, 7-5, last Wednesday in the first round.
