Dockside fire

Fire destroyed a condominium in the Dockside development in Hayes on Wednesday morning. Neighbor Atley Weise was walking the family dog when he noticed what he at first assumed to be fog rolling across an inlet in the subdivision. He huried home and consulted with his mother, Cassie Wiese, who realized it was smoke and called 911. Atley ran back to the residence that was on fire and made sure the occupant was outdoors, then provided the address to the dispatcher. Captain Drew Luellen of Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue said the call came in shortly after 9:30 a.m. and he was the first to arrive on the scene. Fire was coming out of a window on the water side of the house, he said, and within minutes the front window blew out as well. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, said Luellen, but there was extensive fire and water damage.
