As the Mathews High School Blue Devils’ baseball season came to a close on Memorial Day at Chincoteague in the first round of the regional tournament, there were a ton of positives to look back on.
The previous Wednesday, the Devils played the Middlesex Chargers with a regional berth on the line in the Conference 42 semis. The Devils started with a run in the first by lead-off hitter Ethan Armistead, which was all pitcher Brian Owens needed.
Owens no-hit the Chargers for his second one of the season. The Devils had multi-hit games from Jalen Matthews, Reggie Johnson and Zach Jarosz. This win set up a rematch of last year’s regional quarterfinal against Central Lunenburg.
That Friday, May 27, the Devils came prepared for the rematch. Central Lunenburg came into the finals with a cocky attitude, which was a big mistake.
