The Mathews Blue Devils varsity baseball team showed some life at the plate, but ended up falling to the visiting Middlesex Chargers on Tuesday, 13-4. The Devils started sophomore Michael Wiatt on the mound, but he struggled to find his rhythm, pitching just one inning and allowing five earned runs. Sophomore Liam Penick followed with a strong performance, throwing four dominant innings and recording seven strikeouts. Sophomore Treye Church closed out the game, pitching two innings while allowing no earned runs and adding one strikeout. Offensively, the Devils showed improvement at the plate, outhitting the Chargers with nine total hits. Sophomore Hunter Horsley and Penick led the team with two hits apiece. Senior Blake Hunley, along with Wiatt, Church, freshman Morgan Sterne and junior Mason Perry, each contributed a hit.
