The Mathews High School varsity football team evened its season record to 1-1 last Thursday following a 33-25 win on the road against its crosstown rival from Middlesex.
The Devils dominated the Chargers from the opening kickoff, taking a 25-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. After four starters were injured for the Devils, Middlesex started to make a comeback, but the Devils still held on to claim the victory.
For Mathews, quarterback Stuart Anderson scored on a 31-yard run for the first touchdown of the game on the first drive for the Devils. Running back Jarius Monroe scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown. Anderson followed with his second score, a 41-yard rushing touchdown. Elijah Willis then scored an 81-yard touchdown with a pick six. Anderson was 3-for-4 with his PAT kicks, and scored a two-point conversion to give Mathews the commanding halftime lead.
