Deltas edged in championship series

The Richmond Brewers captured their first Richmond NABA championship, defeating the Deltas two games to one in the best-of-three series last weekend.

Deltaville captured game one on Friday night thanks to a three-run eighth inning home run from Timmy Gillen. The Deltas jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI hits from Jacob Houston, Ryan Pastirik and Scott Crump. Starting pitcher Bryan Bierlein held the lead for 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs. But the Brewers got to the Deltas bullpen in the seventh, scoring twice in the inning, and then again twice more in the top of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead.

The Deltas’ bats woke back up in the eighth. Back-to-back singles in the bottom of the inning from Colton Smith and Crump set the table for Gillen’s go-ahead blast. The Brewers were able to get the would-be tying runs on second and third base in the ninth, but Pastirik took the mound and struck out the Brewers’ 2-3-4 hitters in succession to save the win.
