DAVID M. CULVER

David M. Culver, 86, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2020, surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Janice N. Culver; children, Cynthia Wyatt (Bobby), Neale Culver (Judi), and Margaret Watkins (Wes); nine grandchildren including Nealcyn, Cash, Hardy and Avery; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, C. Cole Culver (Sarah); three nephews, and one niece.

David was the son of Charles Culver and Elizabeth Bowen Culver, attended Benedictine High School, and joined the Army in 1953. He was a 32-year employee with AMF. David was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church and dearly loved his church family. He coached and officiated for Mechanicsville Little League and Hanover Youth Basketball, of which he was also a founder and league president. David loved all sports as a fierce competitor and a not-so-quiet spectator.

David enjoyed many trips to Gloucester. He was excited to volunteer at Petsworth Elementary School as a referee for sports day or as a guest speaker for the Jump Rope for Heart kick-off. As PaPa, he didn’t miss many softball, baseball, field hockey, soccer, or basketball games of his four Gloucester grandkids. He showed up for their plays, concerts, and school programs. PaPa was a proud member of the “Summer of 2012 World Series” GYB family and followed the team to South Boston, Virginia, Florida and Massachusetts. David was appreciative of the generosity of the Gloucester community, especially Kimberly Robins and Preston Higgins, who visited David in Mechanicsville often.

His greatest joy was his family. He loved when his entire family gathered for birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions. His family could count on lots of fun and laughter when they were around PaPa. He would usually be heard saying to Janice, “We did all of this.”

Memorial donations may be made to Gloucester Youth Baseball, P.O. Box 2046 Gloucester, Va. 23061. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
