Cyclists return to Mathews this weekend

Motorists in Mathews are asked to keep their eyes on the road this weekend, as hundreds of cyclists will be coming to the county to participate in the 16th annual Tour de Chesapeake.

The county will be abuzz not only with cyclists, but also with a number of other events that should prove to be fun for all ages.

Mathews County Visitor and Information Center director Ann Miller said more than 200 cyclists have registered so far to participate in Saturday’s main ride. The visitor’s center, along with the Mathews Land Conservancy and Mathews County, host this year’s event.

Events are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ranging from the fully supported ride Saturday with rest stops and refreshments to a dessert reception, a seafood feast, “Art deTour” and more.

Participants will check in from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday at Thomas Hunter Middle School. Local merchants along Main Street will keep their doors open late for the convenience of residents and visitors.
