County evicts Gwynn’s Island restaurant

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors took action against the Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill last Thursday, July 10, evicting the Gwynn’s Island business and its employees from the county-owned property at 384 Old Ferry Road.
According to an email statement from board chairman Tim Doss, the action was taken because the annual rent of $8,874 had not been paid on time. Under the lease agreement, the rent is due by June 1, and the lessee is considered in breach of contract if it’s not paid by July 1.
“The HITW did not pay the rent due by June 1st, has not paid the rent to date, nor have any discussions been initiated on behalf of HITW to discuss arrangements to pay the rent to get the restaurant back open,” said Doss in the statement. “The rent is now a month and a half overdue.”
