County approves new equipment for Port Fun

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 24 approved withdrawing $91,000 from the committed reserve fund to pay for replacing playground equipment at Port Fun, the public park near the high school.

Building Official Jamie Wilks told board members that a plan has been developed for the playground, and County Administrator Mindy Moran said that additional funds for the $105,000 project were coming from the Mathews IDA, which has contributed $10,000; the county’s insurance, which will pay $2,000; and the original fund for the park, which has $3,000 left over from 20 years ago when the park was built.

Supervisor Jack White said he voted for the project “with some trepidation” and recalled that the park was originally built after a citizen movement to raise the money.

“I wonder whether we’ve done everything we could to seek funding,” he said.
