The U.S. Postal Service continues to weigh its options for cutting back on spending, and some of those options could have a direct impact on local residents.

Retired Mathews postmaster Dana Brown offered suggestions for residents who want to save their post offices.

Smaller post offices that are currently staffed with either an officer-in-charge or a postmaster relief are subject to either a reduction in hours or closure, according to the website www.savethe postoffice.com.

For those offices that are closed, USPS could have current box-holders receive home delivery from large, central post offices or allow store owners to take over the job of selling stamps, flat rate boxes, and other items in exchange for a percent of sales.

Surveys are being mailed to customers who receive mail at the post offices that are under consideration for closure, said Brown.
