Christi Lewis to retire from county after 36 years

After 36 years in public service, Christi Lewis will be stepping down next month from her post as director of Gloucester County’s Department of Community Engagement.

The Gloucester native began her career as an education coordinator at Achilles Elementary School in 1983 and, two years later, was selected to serve as director of what was then called the Department of Community Education. She has remained as head of that department, since renamed Community Engagement.

Throughout her tenure, Lewis has been a key part in numerous initiatives, including “The Beehive.” Over the years, the publication of community and school happenings has expanded from an eight-page tabloid to its current 28-page size.

She has also encouraged the growth of the Gloucester Resource Council. That group, which meets once a month, now averages 35 individuals and group representatives, as they work to coordinate services among different county and nonprofit agencies.
