Carolyn Jeanette Hogg Treyz

Carolyn Jeanette Hogg Treyz, age 85, of Hayes, passed away at home on May 28, 2026. Carolyn was born on June 16, 1940 in Hampton, Virginia, and was raised in Gloucester County. She graduated from Gloucester High School in 1958 and afterward attended Pan American Business College in Richmond. Carolyn began working civil service jobs in Hampton for Langley Air Force Base, and then for NASA. She was a secretary for NASA with the original Mercury 7 astronauts and the Apollo program, first in Hampton and afterward moving to Houston. Later, Carolyn continued civil service work in Thailand before moving back to the States and returning to work at Langley AFB. During her time at Langley, Carolyn met General Fred A. “Fritz” Treyz, USAF, a highly decorated combat pilot, who would turn out to be the love of her life. After time in San Antonio at Lackland AFB and in Hawaii, she and Fritz returned to Virginia and married in 1980. The couple acquired and operated Captain Herman’s Seafood Galley in Gloucester Point from Carolyn’s brother, Herman Hogg. After Fritz’s death in 1984, Carolyn continued to operate the restaurant into the mid-1990s. After she left the restaurant, Carolyn often worked with Herman in his restaurants and with his catering. Carolyn traveled many places around the country and the world, both for work and pleasure. She loved her volunteer work at the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown, and especially the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society gift shop, and was a member of the York River Garden Club and the Seven Republicans Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Abingdon Episcopal Church. She loved animals and, over the years, cared for many rescued dogs. She also deeply loved her country and all those who served in the military. More than anything, Carolyn loved her family and spending time with them whenever she could. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Gen. Fred A. Treyz, USAF-ret.; her parents; Wyndham and Lida Ruth Hogg, and her brother, Herman Hogg. She is survived by her brother, Charles Hogg (Barbara); nieces, Robin Hogg Huddle, Lesley Hogg, and Sarah Hogg (Jonah); nephews, Danny Hogg and Jason Forrest Hogg (Joanna); great-nieces, Madeline Huddle, Meredith Huddle (Noah), and Ada Forrest; great-nephew, Asher Forrest, and Mikey, her dog to whom she was devoted as he was to her.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Abingdon Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars, 4645 George Washington Mem.
