The Mathews County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a request by Joe Perdue of Port Haywood to create a private landing strip for a small airplane on property he owns on Route 14 near the waste transfer station.
County Administrator Mindy Conner recommended that the board approve the request. Her memorandum to the board on the matter said that the county had approved two similar requests in the past and that she was not aware of any that had been denied. She said that Perdue could still have the landing strip even if the board denied his request, but Virginia Department of Aviation rules would limit his use of it. She said further that the board has set a precedent and that the matter was a property rights issue.
Four board members voted in favor of the request, with supervisor Charles Ingram abstaining because of a personal interest in the matter; Ingram owns property near the proposed landing strip. Ingram had previously been the board member most vocally opposed to the proposal.
Attorney Conrad Bareford, speaking during Tuesday’s public comment period, asked the board to formally name Court Street for postal purposes. He said the post office still had it listed as Rural Route 1107, which creates problems getting deliveries. Conner said that Brickbat Road has a similar problem, and that staff would research the matter and advise the board at the next meeting.
In other matters, the board:
—Granted a request to change the zoning ordinance to allow stables and barns to be built 100 feet from an adjoining residential property line rather than the previous 200 feet;
—Adopted two resolutions, one granting the county administrator permission to apply for Virginia Department of Transportation funds to establish a project for outfall ditch maintenance and the other giving her the authority to sign the project administration agreement for the work;
—Agreed to reimburse mileage at the annual rate set by the IRS. This year’s rate is 53.5 cents per mile, down from 54 cents; and,
—Set a work session for 1 p.m. on Feb. 8 to review its bylaws.
