It was a tough week for the MHS boys’ baseball team, suffering a pair of shutout losses against King William and Essex and losing Tuesday to the visiting West Point Pointers, 14-2.
King William
Mathews hit the road last Thursday to take on the Cavaliers. Sophomore Michael Wiatt got the start on the mound and pitched four solid innings. He showed good control, walking just two batters and allowing only one earned run.
However, a series of fielding errors hurt the Devils, as King William scored five unearned runs while Wiatt was in the game. Aiden Calderin came in to pitch in the fifth inning, but the Cavaliers quickly stretched their lead to 10-0, ending the game early due to the run rule. Senior Blake Hunley led Mathews at the plate, going 1-for-2.
Essex
Back at home on Monday, the Devils hosted the Essex Trojans. Wiatt and sophomore Treye Church each pitched two innings, and freshman Kristopher Diggs made his first appearance on the mound. While Mathews was unable to get on the scoreboard, the team showed improvement at the plate by making more contact. Essex went on to win, 12-0.
West Point
Mathews returned to action on Tuesday against the Pointers but came up short again. Sophomore Liam Penick started and pitched four innings, recording four strikeouts and walking two. Calderin took over in the fifth, followed by sophomore Hunter Horsley, with Diggs closing out the game.
Fielding errors once again proved costly, allowing West Point to pull away in the later innings. Freshman Morgan Sterne recorded the team’s only hit, while the Devils managed to score two runs off errors, as the Pointers secured the 14-2 victory.
The Blue Devils will look to bounce back when they host the Middlesex Chargers on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
