Blue Devil soccer

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ soccer team earned its first win of the season in front of a home crowd on Friday night. After battling the visiting Northumberland Indians to a 2-2 tie at halftime, the Blue Devils took control in the second half to coast to a 6-2 win. Mathews was led by Salvador Cardenas, who scored a hat trick in the victory. Single goals were scored by Chris Atwood, Seth James and Fabian Cardenas. Elias Hidalgo and Ethan Long were credited with assists, while keeper Logan Koystal recorded nine saves. James is shown at left holding off an Indian player as he goes for the ball.
