Beehive

Nearly 20 years after she first painted a beehive as part of Gloucester County’s 350th anniversary celebration in 2001, Brianna Fleming repainted the symbol of Gloucester with a new design. Fleming, the granddaughter of Gene “Cotton Top” Brundege of Gloucester Toyota, was only 8 years old when she first painted the beehive, which was sponsored by Gloucester Toyota (photo at left). In that painting, she depicted the universe with Gloucester, Virginia, as its center. This year, she repainted the beehive with all of her grandmother’s favorite flowers (photo at right). In addition, she included feathers and sunflowers in memory of her 12-year-old cousin who lost his life to neuroblastoma, as well as a cancer ribbon to honor all of her family members lost to cancer and a red cardinal in memory of her great-grandmother.
